little grandmother, has survived Katrina,
though terra cotta makes her vulnerable.
She holds her vigil in the living room
of my hostess – her splurge –
a chance to delight in the unaffordable.
Stark naked and unashamedly ancient,
she comes up to my shoulder, is missing
one arm, which could increase
her vulnerability, but lends her power
instead; an arm not lost to Katrina,
because a sculptor created her that way.
She smiles into my camera lens,
brandishes the stump of her never-needed
arm, a blissful half-smile – a two-arms-goodone-
arm-better smile, but her dreadlocks,
erect as misplaced phalluses, poke defiance
at the efforts of mortals to reconstruct her world.
They add to her height by inches.
