Biscuits and Stars
For Amy
You make shapes, pressing sharp metal
into the yielding dough: Christmas trees,
angels, and a cloned Santa Claus
appear on the floury board, and we look for the star.
For you the stars are somewhere up above
in a place called sky, pinpoints of light.
You will find one day that they are made of fire,
are huge, more huge than anything that sight
could bring before your eyes; and to explore
their distances in cosmic space you’d need
all your life and more. And the Wise Men’s star
you will never make in biscuit dough or see
in space; but in your loving you will read
its meaning and find the astonishment of light.
