A Late Lunch
You wanted the cherry.
It was red and glazed
hovering on its cocktail stick
above my water, carbonated.
Thoughtless, I ate it
as we waited for food
to arrive. My steak and chips,
your sweet and sour.
It’s mid-afternoon and you
are tired. All shopped out.
When the waitress comes she smiles
like the girl on the door,
the professional greeter.
You are my grandmother
and will insist on paying.
I know this.
