Fête de la Cerise, Céret
Were Picasso and Braque
also moved
by this fête animée,
honouring the harvest
of red bijoux?
Did they also watch
Sardana dancing
from the Grand Café,
sipping aperos
beneath plane tree shade,
With Herbin, Hugué
perhaps Max Jacob too?
Travelling People,
their art, like Chagall's
blossomed in Céret,
Took root in the Musée:
gifts from those
who painted here;
a tradition growing
to rival the cherry.
Snow-capped le Canigou
still watches over
jewels created
in Catalan sun.
And now tourists:
Like luminous rape
breaking out of fields,
shooting from ditches
and cracks in pavements,
Céret's fate is sown.
Céret - capital of the cherry growing region SW France, celebrates with a cherry festival every May
