The Visit
Anne visits.
Her green fingers
meddle in my pots.
‘Water’ she diagnoses
‘It’s bone dry
and pot-bound too.’
When I am old,
I tell her in my head,
perhaps I’ll care for plants
tucking them comfortably
into warm earthenware
and moistened soil
trimming their roots and shoots
wiping their shiny leaves
plucking crisp shreds of brown
loving them into life
and health
and bloom.
But secretly I hope
I won’t have time
that people will encroach
and phone
and visit
call
drop in
pop round
and keep me talking
lest
I vegetate.
