Empty Ark
Amongst the many couples on this barque
I sit alone, awaiting the return
of my true love. It is no longer dark
and Noah scans the skies from bough to stern
for any sign of her. She came back once,
finding no solid roost; but now I wait
for the harsh winds of some design or chance
to bring her back to me. It seems my fate
to fly into a world where everything
is bound in pairs: that anywhere I rest
no mate will hear the lonely song I sing
or answer me. While the whole world is blessed
by the bright rainbow, who will need my love,
when I am left behind – the second dove?
