Over a Singing Stream
For Sorrel and Storme
The forest has a waiting look.
We find a stream
where the laughing, bubbling waters fan out
into a slow wave of tawny-gold
before winding away between the deeper shadows.
Between the pines there are quiet distances,
spaces of January’s chill.
A vixen slips by – a febrile warmth in the cold flow.
There are only the three of us:
just me, our child and our child’s child
to look for the spot you would have chosen.
The sky is funereal, withered;
winter trees, dimmed by a moleskin haze, sleep.
We stand together, on a little bank of shingle,
locked into our separate, silent grief
watching the soft grey bloom of ash rise and fall
over a singing stream.
Monotony of land time is suddenly lost
in the stream’s forward movement, in the living rhythm
of a journey to some other place.
