I Have a High Room
I have a high room just beneath the roof’s rib
where pigeons clatter their tiny webs of feet;
a dialogue of city sounds humming in a light bulb
where I can see myself rising
higher than the cold roofs ringed by diesel.
Here, they leave their invisible
circles of dirt, but I will keep
a perfect corner for singing in.
Here, I have my bed, like a boat.
I dig deeper into its warmth
and smile at the ceiling watching me.
Paint, like magic, makes maps of itself
where it is breaking off
falling into its ordinary place in the world.
I can read the almanac of broken things
like a story, things falling into place,
sounds of plates on silver sinks
being laid gently, like flowers.
