Late August
Dewdown.
A red-making dusk.
The last rook
Echoes round outcrops of memory,
Then flies towards Dixton Wood.
After which, silence.
On the matter of bonfires,
The air is full of aromatic smoke
Redolent of childhood.
A tractor breaks the eerie calm,
Gnaws away at rural idyll,
And converts short stubble
Into characteristic plough-brown.
Half the village
Drifts towards the pub,
The other half settles into
Soap opera.
Resurrection is an art:
What cannot die must rot.
