The Church of England
[1999]
The vicar at the pre-Millennium service
From his pulpit in south Manchester
Compared the message of Our Lord
The Christ, Jesus
To the resilience of a particular postbox
That survived the Irish bombing of the city
With all its letters intact. Those messages
Perfectly untouched
We must assume he meant
Messages of hope -
Hope and love. Resourcefulness
Or threat. Panic, pain and debt.
