On John Oldham, Who Wished for the Independence of a Small Estate
I think this poet died hard up, and young.
Yet his wished-for estate, three hundred years
Walled-in with rhyme, how fresh it still appears,
Not a tree felled … And I, brooding among
These no less shadowy trees and pastures, prove
The heirs of hope are still the richer men,
Their property and rents secured for when
They leave their dreamed-up Edens for a grave.
Hopes, far more than experience, dilate
Through time, are history’s corrected measure;
Though he who fathers them, for a period
Seeing himself as heir to an Island, to a Treasure,
To the Brotherhood of Man, to the Kingdom of God,
Only inherits a six-foot estate.
