The End of Summer
White peacocks in the shade
of cedar trees, like ghosts or angels,
shimmer, as in the summer sky
the full moon rises, a golden lantern,
while across the lawn
the old house waits, remembering
days long ago.
Light streams from open windows.
In the porch, a figure dressed in black
steps out, to wander aimlessly
along the paths, solitary
in the moonlit garden,
a woman left behind
in her own past.
Later, the distant sea
murmurs on the shore,
the wind tossing the trees
as dawn breaks, the peacocks
shattering the silence with their harsh cry.
A thin rain falls, and summer
is over.
