Disappearing moon
Not a great sick lemon disk
of a sun
setting in a yellow sky with wisps of pink
above the violet land and the blue
of the tree and sower
but an immense orange moon over
the same dark blue,
so huge and close that through
my binoculars flat becomes round
and the air seems to hum with the sound
of its presence,
unearthly, other-worldly, blood-orange red
with blue markings like areas of intelligence
on a phrenological head;
mystérieuse d'extraordinaire beauté
it’s so alive
above the spires and lights this summer Sunday
night, I feel my self revive,
pulled like a turning tide
by gravity
within its forceful field;
but just when I think I might yield
myself through the window
it begins to disappear – a slow
engulfment from the bottom up
its bruises of distinction and turbulence
infusing with the advance
of Prussian blue,
and I see its dear and fearful face as distance
and nearness at once
and think that if strange birds should rise
on hinged wings, with maize-green eyes
I shouldn't be in the least surprised.
