Brockwell Park
Giant flowers of bright yellow,
in factories of air.
Green bush and trees,
pouring concrete over gardens of water.
Massive brown birds,
in shorts,
cutting grass, repairing sections of light.
Reading newspapers
aloud, stone walls and empty buildings.
The sky is leaving all its colours behind.
It drinks
out of sleeping glass with each blue hand.
Through parted trees a church steeple pierces
its silver heart.
Speechless your crowded eyes;
its language of parks and rivers.
Whoever faces the clock tells the wrong time.
We stand at midnight behind interior fences,
sweltering gates.
Over Brixton's
brooding shoulders,
the head of London, its dark hair and lined face.
Rising in the West,
it watches
us climb, firing at will its repeated live messages.
