Sunday walk
Walking up a hill at 70ยบ is angle
Two boys by my side
Puffing and panting, gasping, “ooh”
At the circular view as the South Downs
Opens under a blue grey sky.
Into woods up a stony chalk path
Diverging east, west, south,
Which Way?
“Any bears?” says Carl.
Deeper in and darker still we climb.
Silence beckons.
Lunchtime sitting on crackling grass
Logs piled high over River of Styx
Off they jump “aah” thump!
Ferns in deep green tangle,
Pines tall right up to sky
Cones lay brown on the dried up grass.
Insects buzzing around my head
Cannock Chase 1956.
Ferns all over, ferns so green.
Snakes so deep in the dangerous depths.
“Mad girl”
Dancing on a tree trunk.
Say hello to yellow dandelions
Shooting out of undergrowth green
Underneath the tall pines.
Orange spots point the way down.
Silence fills the air as we descend.
No birds
Just two boys and me
Walking in time
As they hurtle down the hill.
