the painter on her yellow chemise
on the linen in her pretty dream
he imagines her white ones
in an otherwise slack moment
she yawns & sees Rothkos
in diminishing vulnerable light
the etymology of lovers
in a tightening mouth
rocket sticks falling
as burnt syllables to earth

a carnival moon in green shades
creamy clothed sodium blonde
& loosely buttoned
she gives a little
sunlight to the silos
her second hand denim
in the stop of your eye
the back of her hand
on the beech wood veranda
her shoe prints
on the dash of the Renault
a whole day's grammar
smeared with lipstick
on the tap room wall
your people are lovers
in a retextured passage
beyond the portico
