She Always Cries on Sunday

There’s an ashtray on the window sill
that houses her most recent cigarette,
smouldering quietly to itself,
and the window pane is painted with raindrops
that race down to the ledge,
and drop into the puddles below.
She’s been left alone again
with the thoughts you’d rather not have.
The ones that you never seem to lose
even if you confide in someone
who pretends to listen.
And there’s no one around
save the man asleep, slumped in the armchair
who might as well be miles away.
She lights another cigarette
as the raindrops are reflected
in the tear that runs down her cheek
and drops into the ashtray.
