Butterfly, Breath, Small Birds
Butterfly in tar: a stained-glass fossil.
And this laurel tree, green all winter –
ramifying, dreaming households.
Heart-ice, cloudlight, geese floating over:
whose future in their feathered bones?
Bloodbeat and heart-thump steady as they go.
Breasts and everything on show,
but it’s the pierced right ear
he finds his eye going back to: room so cold
they could see their breath at bloodheat
frosting the windowpane,
blinding its clear unlying eye.
Two small birds in the leafless ginko:
through steelblue chill their pure
antiphonal whistling. Then a sudden
shuddering warmth: his jacket, her arms
around it. He’s inside somewhere, feeling
each button, knuckle, lips that tilt away.
Such sharp song they had, and clean green throats.
