Trish O'Brien
Metamorphosis
A gentle child, all of eight,
dwarfed by the baby grand,
spindly legs dangling
from padded velvet heights.
Delicately poised,
her tiny hands descend
and latent beauty stirs
in its ivory cocoon.
She’d struggled
with the bones of it,
the notes finally surrendering,
lulled by little fingers.
Could she now, by deft yet
sensitive shaping,
breathe life into the dormant keys.
Her opening chords, carefully
placed in soft and singing tone,
the faint catch of breath between phrases,
richly graded swells of sound,
the poignant sigh at the close.
Our beaming smiles consume the silence,
the little one glows.
