Song
A hawk that goes low-skimming over,
Darkens a moment with swift shadow
Redolent gorse and tossing clover,
Radiant inches of heath and meadow;
But when it rises to the sun
With hard wing stretched and whistling feather,
Earth knows no more of either one—
Shadow and hawk are lost together.
So it is now—the thing I knew,
Worshipped and loved with my whole being,
Was but the shadow cast by you;
Now both have vanished from my seeing.
One fades in cloudless, vacant sky;
The other's roaming God knows whither;
In the chill spaces heaven-high
Shadow and hawk are lost together.
