Palmer Exhibition
Eagle and lamb are equal in his eyes
and bats in the distance, a hair-line caught,
a moon often above some heavy trees,
a tower without question in the hills,
and always the threat that angels appear.
This view passes with a change in autumn,
a yoke of oxen almost going slow:
women muscle with baskets on their heads,
and now the valley is stretched like jewels
held to the light as if it lives again.
Not many here, dark so they will not fade,
with stops by countryside no longer wild,
but it looks like a never-ending heather
and the signs are still thought a place for thieves
or what is a midday affair, all smiles.
At every pause which follows we are lost
in stacked-up corn, the golden detailed air
just out of grasp and one or two sunsets
building over the path we used to take,
leaving us bones and some bewildered fields.
They come and go not sure if they are flames
or signify the blossom of a night,
touching some lips as if to make a point,
and then wake up in woods and see the sky
as a frame or a gap, never the time.
