raining pebbles
for Martin
on the phone
we speak in little stones
speckled, round, ridged.
you come fresh from the coast
with your shining armfuls
of orange and blue.
it’s hard to exchange pebbles on the telephone
with everyone watching –
sometimes I lob yours straight back
but on braver days
I sift through my tiny hoard
and dribble one or two in your direction.
they’ve been rolled
so smooth in my fingers
that I more drop than pass
but the way you lean to catch them
as if they were deliberately thrown
remains so deft.
Judy Kendall lectures in creative writing at the University of Gloucestershire and researches in translation and Edward Thomas’s poetry. Her collection, The Drier The Brighter, will be published by the Cinnamon Press in April 2007.
