Waiting for the Sky to Fall
When the phone rings with the news, it is raining
or not; the heart stops,
the heart goes on; the same language
is no longer enough, though words come,
performing acrobatics on the tongue.
The day, incongruously, is just like all the rest,
except now it is extraordinary
for its ordinariness.
Death, it seems, is no more remarkable
than the dinner, going cold on the table;
the silence, louder than anything we say;
or the way the darkness drinks up the light,
slowly absorbing the houses and trees,
causing us to look up at the sky - the sky
we've looked at so many times before;
the sky that refuses to fall.
