Recipe for a Greyhound
Don’t think – you won’t be quick enough.
Settle,
sink –
hounds spring from the deepest sleep.
Make your mind a boundless park.
Pay attention to trees, thickets
and rising grass – undulations are irresistible.
Let the sun set, leave it grow wild,
the spring needs time to pool.
Get used to the dark.
When you can see moonlight
fashion the finest bones
from the best calcium,
tie the ligaments, tune the muscles,
conjure the sprung spine,
charge it with a lightning spark.
Give it a heart that can hold thunder
and stroke it into grace.
Leave it lie.
Go back to the park
wait for the first leaf to spin like a prayer wheel
whistle softly, your dog will come whiffling.
Offer your hand, your scent.
