Martin Hayes
I was born in Paddington, London, in 1966 and have lived in and around the area the whole of my life. I went to school at Quinton Kynaston on the Finchley Rd and was asked to leave at 15 for disruptional reasons. I became a carder, putting flyers through people’s door, for a mini-cab company that my mother had a share in. After somebody reported finding a thousand cards chucked behind a steel bin by the side of the public toilets in West End Lane I was brought into the office and forced to work in accounts. All the while I was doing football and cricket and between the ages of 16 and 17 was offered schoolboy contracts by Leyton Orient, Arsenal and the MCC but because I didn’t have the dedication I passed and went out regularly down the pub to drink. The company took off at some stage and got called Phoenix Express and I became a controller there. I worked as a cycle courier for a year getting fucked and cunted by all sorts of people. I was risking my life delivering their parcels I thought and their attitudes have never really left me. I went back into the office in 1998 and am now a controller/supervisor.
