Riffling the pages of someone else’s
favourite book, you found a faded note
telling you what to do with your life.

considered till you mentioned it.
Vagueness, its attractions and dangers,
discuss.’ You were younger then, granted,
but the plan drawn-up has stayed only that.
The future you remember is hidden
somewhere at the back of a cupboard
in a house you left quickly years ago -
a hope fallen slowly away
as you grow clearer headed, less likely to return
and find it now makes you blush, like a bad photo
that caught you unawares, with a silly haircut.
