Carlos Hiraldo
A Day
It was a sunny, blue-sky day
and there was a crowd
below the scaffolding,
but the world before his eyes
was black.
His breath quickened,
like a train speeding to derailment,
when they placed the sack over his face.
His heart jammed against his chest
repeatedly
as if hoping to come out
before the end.
Four hands escorted
his rope-bound body
into position,
then another rope was fastened
around his neck.
The crowd could see
the dirty, white sack
inflate and deflate
rhythmically.
One distinguished looking man
now came over
and inspected the rope.
When he was satisfied,
he stepped back,
making eye contact
with a man
who pulled a lever.
Part of the scaffolding dropped,
and down came a corpse.
