Emily Wills
The Musician and the Blind Girl
Pan-pipe and flute,
their music pierces her skin
like marram grass. She hears
grey downpour of his hands,
his spattering fingers, beating
the drum of her body. She knows
that he holds his small guitar
as if it were a child.
He blows high green tremolos
from ocarinas, bubbles of notes
like drowning;
stops with quick fingers
the holes of her eyes
so she fills with sound.
He takes this brittle shell
to his lips like wine,
tells how he opened its spiralling
long-stopped cry
with fearful hands.
Now his breath coils
through opaque corridors,
as if something lived again
in this fragile helix.
Behind her stone stare
something breaks:
green waves into rhythmic light,
the shell howling for the sea.
