Chinese Christmas Card
White, muted blue, a snowy afternoon, a vacancy
the land undulating into the flat river
the curved bridge and slender people passing over
with their fluted parasols and pyramid hats,
draped in furs, or in rags leaving skimpy legs bare
all painted so dainty, though they’re hunched against the cold
all treading in one direction over the bridge, no shadows.
I’m looking down on these delicate, cold people
from where, what vantage point?
-exposed, hollow vertigo - the space indifferent white -
slight people barely lifted from snow.
I nestle back into my own corner of the world
my warm notch of time
and think of the good luck scrolled in fortune cookies.
