Rainbow Chaser
I remember speckled streams, flecks of foam,
snow-melt water lapping ankles numb as
I tickled your soft underbelly, lulled
you almost senseless, till with great arching
arrogance you shimmied off from shallows,
flashing your flamboyant coat,
flicking your disdainful tail,
you were in your element.
Now I have you, here on this cold slab, fish
out of water, still, decapitated,
gutless. I snick your fins anti-clockwise,
ventral, caudal, dorsal, pectoral, scrape
your slapey skin against the grain until.
grain by grain it shimmers in my basin,
fool’s gold, glittering rainbow’s end, scaled
down to solitary supper, pity
I have no other fish to fry.
