Pouring In The Calder Valley
Where everything is piped along the valley
Running with water descending, accumulating,
Overflowing and continuing,
Towns are blockages slowly freeing themselves.
Cottages and empty or converted mills
At the edge of the river or the canal
Look ready to be awash and sometimes are.
Sloping bits of garden and narrow beechwood
Make debris carried east. The car is swimming
In the moisture, condensation inside,
Rain and the soaked cottonwool of mist
Outside. Lorries splash trans-Pennine.
I think of the wicked in the time of Noah
Like spiders spinning in the plughole
When someone turns the bathtaps on.
