Dreams of Old Men
He had become a monk
in a cell, where incense rose
from floorboards,
and the monastery bells like cloud-cover
braided the mountain tops.
And at night
just after compline
he dreamed of migrating birds
return to an Arctic spring,
resting in glacial shorereeds
awakened by the Northern Lights
(they were that low)
that fell like aspen petals
in the bird-hushed
orchards of the spheres.
