scrubbing a doorstep
with her sister Vi
or this one
running the one hundred
and ten yards final
barefoot at the old White City
and here
I cannot tell the fake
stocking seams
(eyeliner ankle to hem) from the real thing.

Thomas Marsh’s Cheese Shop,
Bishopsgate. It could be her
marking time in the queue
for crumbly mature slithers
to drop into a hand
of grease-proofed paper
away from the wire. It’s eating
into the hard rind,
the press
of coats, veined marble,
the split second smiles
as another turns on her heel.
