Old Cottage
“It’s probably in the next field,”
they agreed
as they walked through the grass
wondering what there might be
left to see
and there it was
in its beautiful surroundings
two walls at right angles
ruined remnants
covered in frolicking ivy
no roof
One of them gazed
emotions shuttling and weaving
he’d been born there
didn’t remember leaving
two years old at the time
more than sixty years ago
had never seen it since
but it evoked now
indescribable sensations
understandable elations
some sadnesses, turmoils
anonymous gradations
It had a name*
unknown except to a few
perhaps only the three of them
there that day
they stayed for a space
and then they walked away
