Without Them
The living are demanding. Dinners,
pleases & thank-yous, listening
to the living when what they have to say
are the same things, over and over.
When one of them dies
a huge weight of responsibility
lifts off, up into the sky.
Without them, the light plays
over the earth’s undulations
the same as it ever did
when they were there,
distracting attention from it.
Without them, it is so peaceful.
Except for the feeling
that something is missing,
as if an operation performed
in one’s sleep had removed
some internal organ
responsible for certain vital functions.
