Editorial
With this issue THE NORTH becomes independent of its founding establishment, The Polytechnic, Huddersfield. That is, it becomes penniless. As every school child knows, that means a break in editorial silence to beg for subscriptions, resubscriptions, donations and food parcels. You know the form - send us £3.75 for the next 3 issues or see THE NORTH go west.
About the name. Ian Cadman of Perth, says You call that North? Writers from Bournemouth and the Channel Islands tell us they were born in Leeds or studied at Newcastle, do they qualify? We say, as MacNeice said, The North begins inside. Ted Schofield, our esteemed Art Editor, is from Surrey, for instance, and plays the cello, but we don’t care. One of the most Northern writers anywhere (Martin Stannard) is from Felixstowe. It is true we are pretty pissed-off up here about the very real North/South divide, and to an extent geography is politics is art. But there is less to this magazine than that. (Read on gentle reader.)
And finally. While you’re parcelling up your cheques, send us a letter with a view to publication. We want a letters section. Please no Poetry Reviewy sort of things. There is a magazine for those already, or so it seems.
And finally. The next issue is a SPECIAL edited by Keith Jafrate. Don’t miss that (ie subscribe)! Submissions for the following issue now warmly requested (with sae, please).
Meanwhile, good reading!
