Gentlemen
Face to the wall
this good intelligent man
is stalls away from me:
off limits, round my eye’s corner,
its puritanical right-angle.
Yet from where I’m facing
I catch the full pent-up up-
roariousness of his flow.
Is it goodness I hear
beating its porcelain drum?
Or is that frantic agenda
what intelligence has to do?
Too late to ask him now:
he’s dried off, zipped and gone
while I’m still plucking up.
Goodness is easy, we can handle that.
But intelligence, sheer articulate
braininess fountaining forth,
how can we trust it?
How can we not trust it,
we gentlemen-dunces
facing the wall point-blank?
