richard diebenkorn: freeway and snapshot, 1957
the aqueduct flows
free and blue, downhill,
a little or a lot, but
so does everything: the
grass flows green and
greener, and the slopes
flow slopier and slopiest,
but never sloppily. the
gravel flows like shale or
scree because the other side
of an embankment’s always
greener. the bridges flow in
both directions, bank to
bank, like greenback whales.
the forest flows until the
day the sheriff of nothingness
arrests its cardiacal sap the
easement flows in case a
horse or bicycle or highwayman
should happen by.
lines are drawn, though,
like a hundred-dollar haircut.
no flow flows into another.
i can’t discern a freeway.
