The Castle Stormed
We were wretched attempting
to storm the castle.
It was not so much the arrows
but the stinging rain that blinded
caused slipping and snarling
as we wrenched upward glances.
Some unaware of falling rocks
were crushed unaware forever.
Contemptuous of our God,
we trampled our unheeded prayers
into the mud
until the thunder startled us
and the lightning withered the battlements
and fired the castle.
Enemy scorn became screams of terror
and our curses, cries of triumph.
Our somersaulting faith sought
to bury sudden insignificance
with mind-suppressing savagery.
