The Slate Club
Doug’s sister pushed them into it, when Will
went down with flu again in March and she
could barely make ends meet. ‘So, if he’s ill’,
she urged, ‘a woman can keep poverty
at bay a few days more!’ Bob organised
it - Temperance Hall on Wednesdays, six-ish
till Bible Class began - and advertised
it round the village: SLATE CLUB - All Who Wish
To Have An Income When The Earning Man
Falls Sick - ONE SHILLING Per Week Will Ensure
TEN SHILLINGS For Each Full Unpaid Week (When
A Sick Note Is Produced). At CHRISTMAS Your
Funds Will Be Totalled And Shared Equally
Amongst CLUB MEMBERS. Doug ticked names and piled
the coins. Bob volunteered to oversee
inquiries and kept families’ records filed
in boxes. Membership in ’35
had grown to ninety-eight, but after that
it fell; a few loyal ones kept things alive
till ’39, but World War II and what
it brought changed everything. Doug served in Hull.
A blast killed him, as other people ran.
Bob died in Edward Heath’s time, certain still
a Tory’s no good to a working man.
