Eliza Crownshaw
A servant, newly started in employment at the Stag Inn,
Malin Bridge
Laying her things out the night before she left
she forgot it was raining.
In the next room she heard her father’s voice
like the deep voice of the house.
From her mother, nothing.
The mirror had been her grandmother’s:
real cherry wood, though the silver had spotted.
She turned it towards the candle: it made a yellow
moon dance on the empty wall.
Twisting her hair up into her nape
she steadied the mirror. She would
hold the hair tight with the tortoiseshell comb
(there on the blanket like an amber crow’s wing)
and wear a scarf against the bitter cold.
The voice had stopped. Remembering the rain,
she picked up her things and stepped to the window.
Though there was no moon, she traced
with her childhood the hills and the spating river
and the steep-dropping lane.
