Inquest
He could not have been concentrating on his driving,
And the look of ecstasy on the girl's face
Hardly suggested that she herself had been behaving
As a lady should in public. Moreover,
The position from which the firemen and police
Extricated the pair was compromising,
To say the least, crushed in each other's arms,
Never before quite so close together—
Though how they managed it in so small
A car, especially behind the wheel,
Left the investigators guessing.
Yet, knowing all those daring young dreams
They had before mutilation, some of us
May not blame him if, for one long moment,
He took his eye off the future, the law
In both his hands, and looked his last on beauty.
Missing them now, all their brief fortune spent,
The road clean again, their heat gone to the fire,
How can we not be glad that they so blissfully
Were so unwise, laying down their lives
To be such friends? Needs must when the devil drives.
