Tossable Poetry
I only asked for warm water
to clean the downstairs windows,
when the gent invited me into his party.
He said he’d like to rework my
squeaky-clean assonance into something
more subtle, like charades.
I would be his backcloth
helping to save poetry
in the relative merits of tossed salads
and can you read them like tea leaves.
Passing-the-parcel left everyone sweating
till the music copped out on a loop,
then questions fed off the question,
WHY ARE WE HERE.
My cue to pare the language to fresh air,
before they slashed my wrists,
then read out the blood.
