Yukon Territory
far from other places knee deep
among the red-mauve blossoms of swaying fireweed
there is a graveyard without stones instead
shabby one-roomed houses like elderly chapels
white painted clapboards
bright coloured roofs
not one higher than my hips
not one longer than my arm
looking alice-like through the window
you may see
a kitchen saucepan
a dead radio
a cracked cup
perhaps a doll for company
do their ancestors
come to play schoolhouse?
let us sit at this table tonight!
in our earthly lives
we crouched by the campfire
drew the animal skins about us
in the serenity of our teepees
but look what they have done for us
here there are comforts we must share!
that evening I sat by my mountain tent
listening to the glacier crack and groan
on its way to the sea
listening to the cries of wolf and owl and loon
and the wild geese
heading south for the winter
when it was dark
there were northern lights
and the sky skipped and danced
