She had arrived too early -
Or they were late -
Ushered into a back parlour
Warming fire
after sixteen hours
Teeth shattering in a
Rattle-box.
Wilting, she waits at this last post
with George the Third, the Prince of Wales
and General Wolfe.
Jane Eyre looks on General Wolfe:
Red clashing with blue and buff
a stormy sky
a sympathetic audience
except one
an exotic observer.
The noble alien crouching
in the foreground:
muscles clenched
coiled, naked curiosity;
Tattooed and feathered
his rich ochre leeches
the seeping claret of the
dying General
his master.
Grey eyes probe that
Shuttered distant gaze
A painted fellow to the
Natural force
Pacing, in bondage,
the battlements at Thornfield.
The scene has been set.
Troubled, uneasy,
She drops her gaze,
turns to the hearth
and waits.
At Thornfield
The aroused Captive
Explodes from
His crenellated Prison
Piloting his future
Man, horse and dog
Thunder irrepressibly
Towards the George Inn
at Millcot.
