Library
No one is shouting here.
It is cool and clear and elegant,
a fine place for a nap.
The books I make fall into silence
here, disappear between slim
volumes in special collections.
At Stanford, in the old library,
I found 3 rows of pamphlets from the
17th Century, literary journals,
the First Small Press Revolution,
pamphlets full of gossip and essays,
news and poetry, stories and public
announcements, pamphlets full of life.
I was 19.
It pleased me that the printing press
took books from the monks and gave them
to anyone, poets, writers,
gossips, fools.
It pleased me to hold a pamphlet
300 years old.
Fly first insight into the power
of the Second Small Press Revolution
was that I got fired for giving
high school students an article from
the L.A. Free Press called, Student as Nigger.
The First Small Press Revolution grew into
a monster, a giant megapoloptic, celluloid,
international thing that fragments the word
and the power of those who create it.
I would like to know someone who has seen
those 3 rows of pamphlets from the 17th century.
I would like to wait here with my books
for innocence to come round again.
