Lot 161
Print of a Turner here, quite a nice frame.
Aged porter holds it up, crooked again;
Crackling mike beguiles like the word of God:
Are you still in? I am still in. I nod.
Selling at twenty two. I will take ones.
Man in the corner cuddling his mobile phone
Offers the merest twitch. Bid is against you, sir.
One with maroon bow tie and bored hauteur,
Filters out smoke, lowers his right eyebrow.
Any more then? Right. I am selling now.
Taps with his pen against the table top.
Too late. Some, you said, never know when to stop.
His turn to nod as he knocks it down to me.
What will we do with our third Storm at Sea?
Will you curse in Spanish and call me stupid.
Or worse, roll big brown eyes and look vapid?
A very fine bentwood hatstand, 162.
I go to pay and find there’s a bloody queue . . .
