Compline
The solitary boy
picking gentians
along billboards
under the yawning El
wakes an old man
long asleep in a chair
in night-blue
shadows, the leaning
willow casts,
the one between
the birdbath
and chittering rows
of evening primrose
about to draw
their waxen cowls
before compline,
and the rush of night air
hovering in cranberry bogs.
