Dear Tim Kendall,
Michael Hill (Thumbscrew 15) ticks me off for suggesting that Anthony Thwaite’s ‘Mr Cooper’ is a pale imitation of Larkin’s ‘Mr Bleaney’, pointing out that the former appeared in The Owl in the Tree (1963) and the latter in The Whitsun Weddings (1964). Apparently, “Mr Knight clearly owes Mr Thwaite an apology”.
‘Mr Bleaney’ was completed in May 1955, broadcast on BBC radio in August of that year, published in The Listener on 8 September and subsequently included in the anthology New Poems 1956. In his Larkin biography, Andrew Motion writes that Thwaite “had admired Larkin’s poems ever since first reading them in the 1950s” and quotes Thwaite on their friendship: “From an early stage we got on extremely well. I was a colossal admirer, but when we first met he wasn’t so famous that I felt in awe of him.”
Do I still have to go to the Headmaster’s study after lessons?
Best wishes,
Stephen Knight
