First time out, I should have known:
sailing into a U-turn,
carefree in the crush of Whitehall traffic,
grinning, “Let’s annoy that bus!”
Always ahead of yourself,
big-beaked, sniffing out the next adventure,
hand stretched backwards for me to grab,
swept me off my feet;
dovetailed neatly
into your slipstream.
Cleared for take-off too soon,
careless of the rules,
you hurtled out of the world
ahead of schedule.
No more chariot races with time.
Are you taking up new challenges,
released from earth’s rulebook,
testing the limits of the courts of heaven?
